In August 2026 ChatGPT started taking restaurant bookings in the US and Canada through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp.

ChatGPT started taking restaurant bookings last week and whether your restaurant can be booked comes down to a decision you potentially made years ago. Ask ChatGPT for a table and it now checks live availability through OpenTable, Resy and Yelp, then books it without the diner leaving the chat. US and Canada for now.

Whether a restaurant is bookable in ChatGPT is decided by which reservation system it uses. On OpenTable, Resy or Yelp Guest Manager, you’re in. On anything else, forget it. You don’t rank lower, you’re simply not bookable at all. No amount of work on your website or your Google profile changes it. Selecting a reservation system used to be an operations decision. Now it’s a distribution one.

Then look at who the three partners are. OpenTable is owned by Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG). Resy is owned by American Express, which folded Tock into it last week and has agreed to buy TheFork. Yelp licensed its reviews, photos and business data to OpenAI in late July, and bookings were switched on seventeen days later. All three are marketplaces, and each one now sits between ChatGPT and your diary. No commercial terms were disclosed for any of these moves.

There is something worth noticing though. A diner can book in the chat, but changes and cancellations happen back on the partner’s platform. The booking moved into ChatGPT. The diner’s account and history stayed with the marketplace.

In July I wrote about Square switching on commission-free AI ordering for its own sellers. The AI does the discovery and the order, payment and customer data land in the restaurant’s own system. Reservations already work that way on Google, where Reserve with Google hands the booking to whichever system the restaurant runs. Nobody has built that for the assistants. On ChatGPT, the route runs through three marketplaces.

UK operators aren’t in this yet, but the direction is set. Google AI Mode already books tables here, and Resy has been live in Claude since April.

This is being assembled one deal at a time, assistant by assistant, and so far the assistants are signing marketplaces, not opening a route any booking provider can join. Google has shown the open version works on its own surface. So who builds it for the assistants? Every month nobody does, it becomes a little more difficult.
